Invasion Day

LeftCast #2, January 31st, 2007

Mp3

A major victory has been won by the Aboriginal movement in Australia. The Queensland attorney-general’s department has decided that Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley will be charged with manslaughter over the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee. Mulrunji, an Aboriginal man, died in police custody on Palm Island in 2004.

Hurley's charge was announced by Andrew Boe, Palm Island council’s legal adviser, to the 700 people who had gathered at Brisbane’s annual Invasion Day rally on January 26.

The announcement changed the focus of the rally to a more conscious celebration of Aboriginal resistance.

Since many indigenous activists had come to Brisbane for the protest from communities across Queensland and New South Wales, Invasion Day 2007 presented an opportunity to discuss and plan ahead. This was a major theme taken up by the speakers both at the rally and during the militant march that followed.

New LeftCast format

Instead of offering an eclectic mix of audio collected from across the web as well as occasionally offering pieces produced by the RatBag Radio Network, LefTCast inn future will be generating original content. And instead of being only occasionally published and podcasted, LeftCast will be trying to adhere to a regular weekly schedule. I repeat, we will try !, Indeed, we hope to occasionally produce content more frequently if the circumstances warrant it..

J-harp music on the RRN

If you have been a regular listener to audio produced at the Ratbag Radio Network you will know that we’ve made a habit of packaging them between samples of jew’s harp music. This eccentric indulgence will continue. However, you will be pleased to know, that in future we will be showcasing the excellent mouthing skills of people other than ourselves.

The Ratbag Radio Network hopes to serve as a showcase for this archaic instrument. For the time being we feature the modern and occasionally hip hoppish rhythm of Dutch jew’s harp player Danibal.-- who is also a member of GroenLinks -- the Dutch Green Left Party.

Palm Island death in custody

Mp3 download

Queensland's deputy state coroner, Christine Clements in a damning report has criticized the initial investigation into the 2004 Palm Island death in custody of Mulrunji saying that it failed to meet appropriate guidelines. Clements also found that Senior Sergeant Christopher Hurley caused Mulrunji’s death, and accused the police of failing to investigate his death fully. Mulrunji, 36, was found dead on the cement floor of his cell about 11am on November 19, 2004. Since the report has been handed down there has been a campaign by the Queensland Police Union, the Police Commissioner and the state government minister to disparage the report’s findings and recommendations. Clement’s conclusions have now gone before Leanne Clare, the state’s director of Public Prosecution for consideration as to whether charges will be laid.>>

What the media labeled as a ‘ riot” erupted on the island on November 26, 2004 after the results of the inquest in to the death were revealed to the local aboriginal community. During this event the local police station and some other government buildings were burned to the ground. The Queensland Police Service flew in approximately 80 additional police officers to restore order.

The case and its consequences were addressed by Murri activist and Socialist Alliance electoral candidate, Sam Watson, at a Alliance meeting on October 4th.
