mp3

The decision by Queensland Dept of Public Prosecutions not to proceed with any charges against police officer Chris Hurley has led a to a massive outcry of protest and anger from among the local Murri community and their supporters. An earlier coronial inquest had ruled that Hurley was responsible for the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomagee on Palm Island in November 2004. [See background audio and references here] >>
A leading activist in the campaign around Mulrunji's death has been Brisbane Murri leader Sam Watson. Watson is a member of the Socialist Alliance, having stood against Queensland state premier Peter Beattie as a SA candidate in September this year. He is also the Alliance's endorsed candidate for the Senate at the next federal election.

This is a recording of an address given by Watson to the Socialist Alliance National Conference in Geelong on October 29th, this year. Watson reviews the circumstances of Mulrunji's death and describes how the Alliance has worked with the Murri community both in electioneering and seeking justice for Mulrunji.
